Greenfield is located in Franklin County, Massachusetts. It is the greatest populated city in Franklin County, and the only town with a population over 10,000. It is situated in the center of the county. Greenfield is bordered to the north by Bernardston, Colrain and Leyden, to the east by Gill, to the southeast by Montague, to the south by Deerfield, and to the west by Shelburne. Greenfield is 90 miles from Boston and 39 miles from Springfield. Greenfield is home to the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Greenfield Community College and the Franklin County Fair. Greenfield’s Main Street Historic District showcases architecture of Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian properties. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Greenfield’s population was 18,168. This included 7,939 households, and 4,374 families. The average family size was 2.88 and the average household size was 2.19.
